USA Cheerleading Nationals 2010
Anaheim, California March 25-28, 2010
Nationals is the end-of-year competition for cheerleading squads who have earned a bid to this event through scoring an 80 or higher on a USA regional meet. DHS Cheer attends three regional meets that lead up to Nationals.
The Schedule:
The Nationals schedule isn't available until a week or two before the event. Here’s an overview of how it generally works:
- Thursday evening: Girls trickle in to assigned DHS Cheer hotel.
- Friday a.m.: Team meeting at the hotel (time TBD).
- Friday: Competition day at Anaheim Convention Center. Prior to the competition, the team will practice and watch other groups. This is team time and girls do not have free time until after the competition.
- Friday evening: After the competition, most girls go to Disneyland. DHS Cheer will have a set time for all girls to meet in the hotel parking lot before walking to Disneyland so we know that everyone who wants to go to the Disney parks will have other cheerleaders to attend with. At 11 p.m., all girls need to be back in their hotel room.
- Saturday: This day depends on how the team performs on Friday. If they move into the finals, there will be a section of the day devoted to practice. The rest of the day, most girls attend Disney parks. Once again, DHS Cheer will hold a team meeting in the morning to go over the plan for the day and ensure that everyone has a plan. A team lunch is scheduled for noon at Redd Rockett's Pizza Port in Tomorrowland in Disneyland. This is not mandatory, but is a nice way to catch up with the team before heading out to the parks again. This meal is NOT paid for by the team. Girls are responsible for their own meal.
Some girls may choose to spend Saturday visiting family in L.A., touring colleges, whatever. Girls must attend any scheduled team practices before leaving, AND they need to relay their plans to the coach and chaperone. And, of course, they can only leave the Disney area if they are with a parent.
- Sunday: This day is dependent on if the team performs in the finals. If they do, a practice will be held, followed by the competition. Awards are often not announced until evening. Those cheerleaders who need to catch a flight or drive home, can leave after the competition. Those who will remain until evening will stay for the awards with the coach. If the team does not make the finals, families who are driving generally leave in the morning. Those who have evening flights, spend the day by the hotel pool, shopping in Downtown Disney, etc.

- Hotel details:
DHS Cheer has reserved a block of rooms at Red Lion Hotel Anaheim. Cheerleaders must stay at the hotel with a parent or a chaperone. Rooms hold up to four people. We are asking families to book their own rooms. The information you need to get the group rate is provided on this sheet.
- If you would like to share a hotel room to reduce costs, please talk to other cheer families or email Julie Rooney and she will send information to the team. Also, if you are a parent not attending Nationals or you want your daughter to share a hotel room with another family, please also send this information to Julie Rooney and she will send it to the team.
- We are doing away with the chaperone responsibility. Families are in charge of their own daughter at this event. If a parent is not attending, he or she should make arrangements with another cheer parent to act as chaperone for that girl.
The Rules:
- Honor the buddy system or stay with a group at all times.
- Team members are expected to carry cell phones with them and fully charged at all times. Check cell phones regularly to ensure that the chaperone or coach is not trying to reach you.
- Let the chaperone AND coach know if you leave the area with family.
- Respect the curfews and rules given to you by your chaperone and coach.
- Cheerleaders are expected to respect the rules of being on a DHS athletic team — absolutely NO use of drugs or alcohol at any time — no exceptions.
Driving vs. Flying:
- Girls who are driving, are excused from school at noon on Thursday. They are also excused from school on Monday IF they compete in the finals.
- Girls who are flying are not excused from school on Thursday or Monday.
- Girls who are attending Nationals without a parent and do not have a parent chaperone driving them will need to take the same airline flight as the coach.
Meals:
- Meals are not included in the cost of the Nationals trip. A $4.95 breakfast is served at the hotel. Ask for it upon arrival as this is a special rate for DHS Cheer. Girls will need to purchase their own lunch, dinner and snacks. We suggest you budget for $50 a day in meals as purchasing food and drinks in the Disney parks can get expensive.
